Soy protein 'can reduce blood pressure'

Investigating the effect of soy nuts on the blood
pressure and lipid levels of postmenopausal women.

MedWire News: Dry-roasted soybeans can improve the
blood pressure and lipid profile of hypertensive
postmenopausal women, a study suggests.

The 8-week cross-over trial included 60 healthy
postmenopausal women receiving the Therapeutic
Lifestyle Changes (TLC) diet, which is recommended to
lower the risk of coronary heart disease.

Half of the women were randomly assigned to an
unadulterated diet while the remainder replaced 25 g
of non-soy protein in their diet with dry-roasted
soybeans containing the same quantity of soy protein
and 101 mg of aglycone isoflavones.

Francine Welty and co-workers at Beth Israel Deaconess
Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, report
that the soy diet lowered systolic and diastolic blood
pressure in the 12 hypertensive women by 9.9 and 6.8
percent more than the regular TLC diet, respectively.

The reductions were approximately twice as large as
the corresponding 5.2 and 2.9 percent reductions
observed in the 48 normotensive women.

The soy protein diet also lowered low-density
lipoprotein cholesterol and apolipoprotein B levels by
11 and 8 percent, respectively, compared with the
regular diet in the hypertensive group, whereas the
normotensive group remained unaffected.
